Dr. J. L. Natale / founder & applied researcher

From theoretical physics to the mechanics of impact.

Joe Natale brings a physicist's discipline to athletic technique: define the problem, observe, test a targeted change, and let the result decide.

The through-line

Different fields. The same investigative habit.

Joe's path is not a pivot away from science. It is an application of the same discipline to a domain where technique is often discussed more confidently than it is measured.

01

From physicist to applied performance researcher

Joe trained as a theoretical physicist in quantum and statistical mechanics. Techanique is where that training meets the gym: instead of drilling technique harder, he treats it as a system whose force transfer can be observed, measured, and improved.

02

Scientific and clinical-facing work

Joe spent roughly a decade in the biological and clinical sciences, building models that turn messy signals into decisions. One was a COVID-19 detection algorithm deployed in a live pandemic trial. The through-line he brings to athletes: define the question, measure honestly, let the evidence lead.

03

Athletic and martial-arts background

Joe's own training spans Olympic-style and professional powerlifting alongside lifelong martial arts. He isn't a physicist commenting on sport from the outside; he has spent his life under the bar and on the mat. That keeps the work grounded in what an athlete can actually feel and do.

04

Why Techanique exists

Most athletes are told to train harder, swing faster, rotate more. Joe kept seeing the same gap: huge effort produced, but only a fraction reaching the target. Techanique closes that gap. It finds where usable force is lost, then tests specific, reversible changes that put more of it where it counts.

Research philosophy

Treat technique as a question that can be tested.

Techanique works alongside coaches. Joe investigates a defined technical question, provides evidence and options, and returns implementation ownership to the athlete and coach.

01

Start with a bounded question

A useful investigation begins with one specific performance problem, not a promise to improve everything at once.

Clear scope before intervention
02

Measure before declaring

Visible movement, athlete sensation, and outcome data are treated as evidence to compare, not as proof by themselves.

Baseline, change, and retest
03

Work alongside the coach

Joe investigates a specialist question, returns practical findings, and leaves implementation ownership with the athlete and coach.

Coach-aligned application
04

Report the result honestly

A useful conclusion can be a positive change, a null result, or a better question. The evidence should determine the next step.

No inflated claims

Education

Trained as a physicist.

Selected background

Research discipline shaped by real-world signals.

The work behind Techanique combines theoretical training with experience interpreting noisy biological, clinical, and athletic systems where the answer is rarely obvious at first glance.

  • Approximately a decade in consulting and research across the biological and clinical sciences.
  • Developed a COVID-19 detection algorithm from physiological markers that was deployed in a live pandemic trial.
  • Studied with Olympic-style and professional powerlifters and has maintained a lifelong martial-arts practice.
  • Works at the intersection of mechanics, measurement, coaching context, and applied experimentation.

Selected publications

A record of formal scientific work.

Joe's published work predates Techanique but establishes the analytical foundation: complex systems, network behavior, large data sets, and precise models of how local interactions create outcomes.

Physical Review E / August 2020

Precise spatial memory in local random networks

Peer-reviewed research in statistical and theoretical physics.

“More effort is not always the answer. Better transfer can change the result.”
